Emergency Dental Care

A dental emergency like a severe toothache or broken tooth can make you feel worried or anxious and unsure of what steps to take next. The best way to help yourself and protect your oral health is to try to remain calm and call your emergency dentist in Florissant, MO.

At Derhake Dental, we always leave openings in our schedule to provide emergency dental care for patients with urgent needs. We pride ourselves on offering prompt relief and treatment to relieve your tooth pain, resolve the problem, and get you back to your usual daily routine.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

We treat a wide range of dental emergencies, and some of the most common include:

  • Toothaches
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Infected or abscessed teeth
  • Lost dental crowns
  • Lost tooth fillings
  • Food stuck between teeth
  • Dental trauma

Our priority is to stabilize your situation, so it doesn’t worsen. We will do our best to provide treatment to resolve the problem the same day; if we can’t, we will ensure you’re comfortable and schedule you for our next available appointment.

How to Handle Dental Emergencies

We urge you to contact us as soon as you suspect an emergency. Until we see you, follow these tips to ensure your comfort and safety.

  • Toothache — A toothache may be caused by a deep cavity, infection, or injury. Minimize pain by taking an over-the-counter pain medication and rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.
  • Chipped or broken tooth — Collect any pieces of the tooth that you can find and bring them to your appointment. Place a cold compress on the area to reduce swelling.
  • Lost tooth crown or filling — Try placing the crown or filling back on the tooth to protect it; if you can’t, wrap it in tissue and bring it to your appointment.
  • Knocked-out tooth — Handle a knocked-out tooth by the crown (the chewing part of the tooth), and don’t touch the root. Place the tooth back in the socket if possible; if not, store it in a container of milk or the patient's saliva. It’s crucial to see us within an hour of your injury to increase our chance of saving the tooth.
  • Soft tissue injury — If you injure your tongue, lip, or cheek, clean it with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If it’s a deep cut or bleeding uncontrollably, please go to the emergency room.

Don’t Put Off Emergency Dental Treatment!

Left untreated, a dental emergency can lead to further complications or even tooth loss. In the case of a tooth infection or abscess, you risk your general health and well-being by waiting too long to see the dentist.

Rest assured, we will never lecture or judge you, but we will take excellent care of you to relieve your pain and resolve your situation as quickly as possible.

We Are Here for Your Dental Emergency

The caring team at Derhake Dental understands emergencies happen, and we are here to ensure you get the prompt relief and treatment needed to protect your oral health. Please call our emergency dentist in Florissant so we can get you on our schedule as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

A broken tooth may be a dental emergency, depending on the severity of the fracture. A minor fracture that isn’t causing pain can likely wait to be treated until you can schedule an appointment during regular office hours.

However, if a fracture is accompanied by significant pain or bleeding or impairs your chewing ability, you should contact your emergency dentist in Florissant as soon as possible.

Another situation where a broken tooth is a dental emergency is if it becomes loose or the fracture is so extensive we can’t restore it with a filling or dental crown. In this case, we will likely need to extract the tooth.

How Tooth Breaks and Fractures Occur

A broken tooth can result from trauma, such as an injury to the mouth during sports. You can also break a tooth by biting down on something hard, like a popcorn kernel or crusty bread. You may also have existing cracks in the tooth that weaken and cause it to break.

If you break a tooth, it’s important to find and save any pieces of the tooth that you can and rinse your mouth with warm water to keep it clean.
